Kenai shop local program goes live Monday

Kenai shoppers will be able to take advantage of the city’s shop local program, called “Shop Here All Year in Kenai,” beginning Monday, when participating businesses will be able to begin issuing vouchers.

The program, which is being offered in partnership with the Kenai Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center, aims to incentivize shopping at Kenai businesses by awarding vouchers to people who spend money on qualifying items at participating Kenai businesses to spend at those same businesses. People who spend $100 will receive a $50 voucher, while people who spend $200 will receive a $100 voucher.

With foot traffic down in many cities, long-standing chocolate shops are hoping online sales can make up the difference. Simultaneously, pastry cooks and chefs laid off because of covid-19 shutdowns are popping up online, offering candies and chocolates to anyone with a sweet tooth and Internet access. It’s never been a better time to treat yourself to a box of chocolates.

Secondary deals hit six-year high in January

Centaline Property Agency recorded 370 secondary transactions at 10 major housing estates in January, the highest since June 2014, amid hopes over Covid-19 vaccine rollouts and better Sino-US relations following Joe Biden’s inauguration, according to Louis Chan Wing-kit, chief executive of Centaline Asia-Pacific residential operations.

But secondary deals at the 10 estates over the weekend dropped 35.3 percent to 11 from a week ago, with more projects being launched in the primary market.

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Police dispersed protesters at a Sunday demonstration in Hungary’s capital where workers in the country’s struggling hospitality sector demanded civil disobedience and a rethinking of coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Organizers of the demonstration on a central square in Budapest called for restaurateurs to break pandemic rules by opening their businesses to customers Monday, in defiance of strict pandemic measures limiting restaurants and cafes to takeout service.
