Google parent sees record quarterly profits on back of retail ads | Business and Economy News

With consumers spending more time online during the pandemic, retailers have been pushing to reach them there.

Google parent Alphabet Inc’s quarterly revenue and profit surged to record highs, the company reported on Tuesday, powered by a rise in advertising spending as more consumers shopped online.

Shares of Alphabet, the world’s largest provider of search and video ads, rose 3.3 percent in extended trading after the results, which handily beat analyst estimates. Shares of Facebook, which competes with Google in web ad sales and reports its own results on Wednesday, rose 1.3 percent.

Will stores require masks again after update?

Will we see a return of mask mandates at the nation’s top retailers?

With the delta variant surging, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now recommending that people vaccinated against the coronavirus start wearing masks indoors again in areas with high transmission rates.

The new mask guidance announced Tuesday comes nearly 11 weeks after the CDC said in May that fully vaccinated Americans no longer needed to wear face masks. Retailers quickly changed policies for vaccinated customers following the CDC’s last May update.

After foreclosure, future of Montgomery Mall remains uncertain

In an era of radical online shopping, small business activism and extensive health precautions, another mall is on the brink. Earlier this month, Montgomery Mall, a Montgomery Township shopping center that encompasses more than 90 stores, was foreclosed upon.

A judge issued a $118.78 million judgment against the mall’s owner, Simon Property Group’s Mall at Montgomery LP, on July 12, according to court documents. Wilmington Trust, a trustee of Wells Fargo Commercial Mortgage, filed the initial complaint for foreclosure June 8.

Walmart to add tween clothing brand Justice to its stores

Tween clothing brand Justice, which shuttered its brick-and-mortar stores last year, is making a comeback.

Physical stores won’t be re-opening, but shoppers will be able to buy Justice items at Walmart. The world’s largest retailer announced it will sell more than 140 Justice products in 2,400 stores nationwide and online.

The Justice brand already is being sold on Walmart’s website. It will be available in stores beginning Thursday, according to USA Today.
