Fry’s Electronics Is Closing, Another Retail Victim of Pandemic

Fry’s Electronics, a big-box retailer that nurtured a generation of do-it-yourself tech fans and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, announced on Wednesday that it was shutting down operations, effective immediately.

The company, which is based in San Jose, Calif., replaced the contents of its website with a statement that said it had ceased operations and had begun winding down. The retailer, which built a cult following on the West Coast but was unable to compete with the rise of Amazon, blamed the shutdown on “changes in the retail industry and the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.”

It’s the end of an era for technology fans: After nearly 36 years, Fry’s Electronics has officially confirmed that it is going out of business and closing all of its stores nationwide. The company has also completely shut down its online store and replaced it with a goodbye message.

In the announcement message, Fry’s explains that it has made the decision to shutter its operations as a result of “changes in the retail industry and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.” The company is planning a “wind-down process” that it believes best serves its various stakeholders.

GoDaddy and WordPress want to supercharge your ecommerce site

Following its acquisition of SkyVerge last year, GoDaddy has announced that it will make the company’s WooCommerce extensions available for free for its managed WordPress ecommerce customers.

The new plugin bundle contains over 75 premium WooCommerce extensions that, when combined with a vast library of WordPress plugins and themes, will give web designers and developers greater flexibility when creating fully featured and customized WooCommerce stores for their clients.

These new extensions also increase the value of GoDaddy’s WooCommerce plugins from $3,000 to almost $6,000 worth of premium extensions which are available for free for GoDaddy’s managed WordPress ecommerce customers.

Best Buy shrinking some store footprints to focus on order fulfillment

Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) will trial smaller retail sales floors in a few markets as it looks to maximize space for e-commerce order fulfillment, Bloomberg reported Wednesday morning. Best Buy first announced the move during its November 2020 earnings call.

According to the latest report, store shopping space will shrink from 27,000 square feet to approximately 15,000 square feet in the locations, with the remainder used for preparing online orders for either in-store pickup or delivery.
